Palani G. Periasamy
Palani G Periasamy is industrialist and educationalist. He is chairman of Chennai based PGP group of companies.
Early years
Palani G. Periasamy was born in a village of Namakkal district, India. He was the only son among four children and his parents sold much of their land in order to educate him. Subsequent to the death of his father, Periasamy borrowed money from neighbours in the village in order to pursue a college education.
He obtained a BA and MA in economics from from Presidency College, Madras, where he was ranked highest in the state and awarded a Gold Medal.
USA
Periasamy and his wife, Visalashi Periasamy, moved to the United States in 1968, selling almost all of their belongings in order to do so. He obtained a PhD in economics from the University of Pittsburgh, USA, before working as a teacher at institutions such as PSG Arts & Science College, Coimbatore and the University of Pittsburgh. He subsequently became Director of the Graduate School of Business Management at University of Baltimore.
Periasamy then incorporated PGP International Financial and Industrial Consultants Inc., USA. He also extended his investments in the Ramada Inn hotel group and later acquired it, as well as diversifying into other business areas.
Businesses
Periasamy operates the PGP Group of companies. This includes
- Dharani Sugars & Chemicals Limited, estabished in 1987 with a plant at Naranapuran village, Vasudevanallur in Thirunelveli. Two further plants were later constructed, at Polur and Kallakkurichi. Share in the company are traded on the Chennai, BSE and NSE stock exchanges.[1]
- Dharani Finance Limited, incorporated in 1990. This later moved into the tourism sector as Dharani Travel. It handles ticket sales for Indian airlines as well as dealing in tourism and car rental.
- Dharani international Sourcing & Trading, which deals in import, export and trading.
- Dharanai Developers Limited
- Ananthi Developers Limited
- Having acquired hotels across South India through Appu Hotels Limited, in 2001 he expanded his hospitality business by establishing Le Royal Meridien in Chennai. In 2010 Appu Hotels opened Le Meridien in Coimbatore.
Dharani Cements Limited was formerly in the group. Established in Ariyalur District, it was later sold to the Aditya Birla Group.[2]
